Purple Rutile Mini Chalice
Purple Rutile Mini Chalice
This handmade ceramic mini chalice has a graceful, elevated shape, with a rounded cup set on a tall, gently flared foot. The layered Purple and Rutile glazes creates a beautiful transition from rich cobalt blue at the rim through soft blue and lavender tones on the body, with the softly textured surface adding even more depth and variation.
Small enough for a special pour but substantial enough to feel like a little piece of sculpture, this mini chalice is an unusual and versatile addition to a handmade pottery collection. The taller pedestal gives it an especially elegant presence, making it just as enjoyable to display as it is to use.
Details
The cup stands nearly 5.5" tall, and measures 3" wide at the lip. At the base, it measures nearly 3" across, and it holds 6 ounces of liquid. All of my pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe.
Use
This mini chalice is a versatile little cup that can be used for a small pour of your favorite beverage, such as espresso, wine, spirits, or another special drink. Its size could also make it useful for a small dessert, dipping sauce, or other little treat.
Process
This cup was thrown on my potter's wheel using BMix clay, a smooth white stoneware. The small cup was thrown first, and partially dried to leather hard (wet but firm). The cup was then reattached to my wheel upside down, and a wet ring of clay was attached. The tall foot of the cup was thrown from the fresh ring of clay.
After drying and bisque firing, the interior of the cup was glazed in Goldspot glaze, a golden tan. The lip and top exterior was glazed in Emily Purple. Then the entire exterior was glazed in a transparent layer of Rutile. This piece was fired to cone 10 in a reduced oxygen atmosphere.

This handmade ceramic pedestal bowl combines a generous, gently curved bowl with a sturdy raised foot, giving it a low, sculptural profile. Deep blue and purple tones cover the exterior, with subtle variations and flashes of lighter color that become especially apparent as the surface catches the light. Inside, the glaze opens up into warm golden-brown tones, creating a beautiful contrast with the darker exterior.
At 9 inches across and 4 1/4 inches tall, this is a substantial bowl with plenty of presence on a table or shelf. The wide, open form makes it feel both functional and sculptural – a piece that can be enjoyed for its beautiful surface even when it's not in use.
Details
This bowl measures a bit over 9" across the rim, and it stands 4.25" tall. At the base of the foot, it measures 6" across. The foot accounts for about 1.25" of the bowls total height.
Use
The generous size and wide, open shape make this pedestal bowl wonderfully versatile. Use it as a serving bowl for salads, fruit, snacks, or other foods, or as a decorative bowl for displaying seasonal objects, flowers, or other treasures. Its raised foot gives it a little extra presence, making it especially nice as a centerpiece or focal point on a table, counter, or shelf.
