Wood Fired Vase with White Slip Texture and Blue Glazed Rim

$52.00

This gorgeous Wood Fired Slip Textured Vase is just the right size - it can handle a medium sized bouquet, but would also look lovely with just a few buds or feathers. Any color will pop against the rich earthy colors of this pot. A vase of this size can liven up any small space with or without flowers.

This piece was thrown using Laguna Rods Bod clay. It stands 7" tall, measures about 3" across the lip, and it's a little over 4" wide at the shoulder. It's a really versatile size - just big enough to use as a center piece, or just small enough to brighten up an office or bathroom.

The texture was created by coating a layer of Bmix slip (a watered down white clay) on the outside of the pot, and dragging a jagged brush through the wet slip as it was slowly spinning on the potters wheel. I used the rounded end of a wooden knife to press the swirl in through the wet slip.

The top and inside of the vase was glazed in Woo Blue glaze, which is a lovely rich brown with flashes of blue where the glaze is thicker; this glaze is particularly warm and extra rich when fired in a wood kiln. The outside of the vase was left bare, so that the atmosphere of the wood fire in the kiln could add it's own marks and color directly onto the clay. Wood firing produces a rich and varying finish on bare clay, every wood fired piece is truly unique. In this case the atmospheric markings were subtle, which worked quite nicely with the shape, texture and glaze to create a sturdy, steady looking vase that is quietly beautiful.

***Wood firing pottery is a traditional method where pottery is fired in a kiln fueled solely by wood, resulting in unique colors, textures, and patterns due to the interaction of flame and ash with the clay surfaces. The process infuses every piece with both the warmth of the fire and the community effort involved in firing the wood kiln.***
