Rutile White Stoneware Vase with Brown Iron Texture

$70.00

This is a bold vase, made with a white stoneware clay. The Rutile glaze and Iron slip texture creates a beautiful swirl of blue and purple against a rich golden brown backdrop. This handsome vase could turn a modest bouquet of flowers into a gorgeous center piece.

This is a medium-large sized vase, just under 10 inches tall. It measures 4" across the lip, and it's about 6" when measured across the widest part of the shoulder. The inner opening, at the smallest point, was about 2", a nice size for a basic bouquet.

The piece was fired in a gas-fueled kiln, in an oxygen reduced atmosphere. The amount of oxygen around the piece can effect some glazes, and this piece is a good example. There is one side of the pot that was exposed to an oxygen draft. This created a lighter affect on about a 1/3 section of the pot, which is very visible in some of the pictures (particularly in the picture that shows the pot upside down).

I created this vase on my pottery wheel using cone 10 BMix clay. I added a thick layer of slip (a mixture of clay and water) and brown iron stain. I then used a jagged brush to paint texture in through the slip as the wet pot was spinning on the wheel.

The inside and lip of this piece was glazed in tan goldspot glaze. The outside was glazed in rutile glaze, a transparent honey colored glaze with swirls of blue and purple when thick or layered. The 2 glazes overlap in a band around the rim, which resulted in a more solid band of blue.
