Blue Rutile Small Planter
Blue Rutile Small Planter
This charming ceramic planter will brighten any space.
Wheel-thrown on the potter’s wheel and finished in a warm rutile glaze, this planter combines functionality and beauty. Two built-in holes allow for healthy drainage, and the attached saucer protects your surfaces.
The rounded shape of the planter narrows above the drainage plate, to add height and drama. The soft transparent rutile glaze over the stoneware clay and band of blue slip creates a soft gloss of warm honey and lavender blue. This piece would make a lovely home for a small plant friend.
Details
This planter stands 3.75" tall and 4.25" wide at the lip. The base is about 4" wide, and the interior of the planter is unglazed. Two drainage holes - each about the size of my fingertip - are built into the narrowed base to promote healthy drainage.
Use
Perfect for succulents, herbs, or small houseplants. Designed for indoor and outdoor use, the planter can work well on a patio or porch. Or it can be a cheery addition to any windowsill, shelf, or desk.
Process
I threw this planter on my pottery wheel using Sonoran White clay, a white stoneware. After shaping and refining the form, blue slip (a blind of clay, water and blue ceramic stain) was used to add some color contrast around the top. After drying the piece was bisque fired, then dipped in Rutile glaze. This piece was reduction fired to cone 10.
