Wood Fired Swirl Vase with Woo Blue Glaze

$37.00

This handmade wood fired porcelain vase features beautifully organic surface variations created by the natural movement of flame and ash during firing. Soft transitions of blue, cream, and warm earthy tones wrap around the upper portion of the vase, while the unglazed lower section highlights the natural warmth of the clay body. Its dynamic silhouette and atmospheric finish make this vase a striking accent piece, perfect for collectors of wood fired pottery or anyone drawn to one-of-a-kind ceramic art.

Details
This vase stands approximately 5.75 inches tall, measures 2.5 inches across the lip, and is about 3.5 inches wide at the shoulder. The narrower neck helps support floral arrangements while the rounded shoulder adds visual balance and presence. The interior is glazed, and the pot is watertight and suitable for fresh flowers. All of my pottery is dishwasher safe.

Use
This vase is ideal for displaying small fresh bouquets, dried arrangements, or for use as a standalone decorative object. Its compact size makes it perfect for shelves, desks, bedside tables, or small focal points throughout the home. The natural, atmospheric surface pairs beautifully with both rustic and modern interiors.

Process
This vase was wheel thrown in my home studio using Dave's Porcelain clay. The interior was glazed with Gold Spot glaze, the lip and neck was glazed in Woo Blue glaze. The rest of the pot was left unglazed.

This piece was fired in a wood-burning kiln at Desert Dragon Pottery Studio in North Phoenix. Unlike electric or gas kilns, wood firing relies entirely on burning wood to build heat and atmosphere inside the kiln. As the kiln is stoked, flame, ash, and minerals from the burning wood move naturally around the pottery, creating organic surface markings, flashing, and subtle color transitions that cannot be replicated through glazing alone.

The kiln used is a fast-fire wood kiln that reaches temperature in approximately 12 hours. The dynamic nature of wood firing means each piece responds differently to its placement within the kiln, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind works that capture the spontaneity and beauty of the firing process.
