Lavender Tan Swirl Vase
Lavender Tan Swirl Vase
Shimmering lavender tones wash across the surface of this wheel-thrown vase, shifting in color as the light moves. The varia finish adds a touch of iridescence, while the swirl shape through the middle creates a sense of flow and movement. Its flared rim and balanced proportions make it as elegant filled with flowers as it is displayed on its own.
Details
Standing 6 1/2 inches tall, this vase is made of durable stoneware and fired to cone 10 in a reduction kiln. It's about 4 1/4" wide at the widest part of the shoulder, 3 1/2" wide at the lip, and 2 1/4" wide at the foot.
The glaze layers result in matte tan, with glossy lavender highlights, creating a naturally feminine surface. The piece is glazed and fired to hold water securely and is food, microwave, and dishwasher safe.
Use
This vase is well suited for small bouquets, a handful of wildflowers, or as a dynamic decorative piece. Its iridescent surface and graceful shape make it an eye-catching addition to any room.
Process
Thrown on the potter’s wheel using sonoran white, a white stoneware clay. The swirl shape was pressed into the pot with a rib from the outside, and supported by my fingers from the inside. The rib and my fingers were moved upward as the wet pot spun swiftly on the wheel. The neck was narrowed and the lip was flared and finished last.
After drying and bisque firing, the vase was glazed in layers of lavender and pearl tones, then reduction fired to cone 10. The reduction atmosphere enriches the colors and brings subtle variations to the surface, ensuring that no two vases are alike.
