Wood Fired Vases with Red Flashing Slip and Woo Blue Glaze, Single or Pair
Wood Fired Vases with Red Flashing Slip and Woo Blue Glaze, Single or Pair
This one-of-a-kind set of wood fired porcelain vases showcases the organic beauty and atmospheric effects that only wood firing can achieve. Wheel thrown from Dave’s porcelain clay, each vase features red flashing slip across the lower portion, paired with Goldspot glaze inside and Woo Blue glaze along the upper exterior and lip. The result is a layered, earthy palette of warm flashing tones, soft porcelain surfaces, and natural ash effects created during the firing. These companion pieces work beautifully displayed together or individually as sculptural functional art.

These vases are sold individually or as a matching set of two, though each piece is entirely one of a kind. Both pieces are fully glazed on the interior and are watertight and suitable for fresh flowers. All of my pottery is dishwasher safe for easy cleanup.
Use
These vases are designed for both functional floral display and decorative use. The varied neck openings allow for thoughtful flower arranging, while their sculptural forms and atmospheric wood-fired surfaces make them striking standalone display pieces. They work beautifully with fresh or dried florals and complement a wide range of interior styles, from rustic and natural to modern and minimal.
Options
These vases are available for purchase individually or as a coordinated set of two. While they were created to complement one another, each piece is unique and can stand on its own as a functional art object.
Process
Each vase was wheel thrown using Dave’s porcelain clay. Red flashing slip was applied to the lower portion of each piece just after they were thrown, to intensify the orange color response during firing. The interiors were glazed with Goldspot glaze, while Woo Blue glaze was applied along the upper exterior and lip.
This piece was fired in a wood-burning kiln at Desert Dragon Pottery Studio in North Phoenix. Unlike electric or gas kilns, wood firing relies entirely on burning wood to build heat and atmosphere inside the kiln. As the kiln is stoked, flame, ash, and minerals from the burning wood move naturally around the pottery, creating organic surface markings, flashing, and subtle color transitions that cannot be replicated through glazing alone.
The kiln used is a fast-fire wood kiln that reaches temperature in approximately 12 hours. The dynamic nature of wood firing means each piece responds differently to its placement within the kiln, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind works that capture the spontaneity and beauty of the firing process.
