Purple and Rutile Blue Planter with Attached Drainage Saucer
Purple and Rutile Blue Planter with Attached Drainage Saucer
Soft purple tones meet rustic stoneware texture in this elegant wheel-thrown planter. Glazed in a layered Purple Rutile finish, this piece features rich, varied surfaces with flashes of warm tan and blue where the glaze thins over the form. The wide lip and rounded profile make it both functional and eye-catching—a beautiful home for your favorite plants.
Details
Measuring 5 ½" tall and 7 ½" across the lip, this planter is 6 ¼" wide at the base and about 5" deep inside, with a narrowed bottom 1". Crafted from Rod’s Bod clay and fired to cone 10 in reduction, it combines durability with a natural, organic feel. Three dime-sized drainage holes are built into the base to allow water to flow freely and prevent overwatering.
Use
A perfect choice for small- to medium-sized plants, such as ferns, pothos, or trailing vines. Its subtle glaze tones complement green foliage beautifully and make a lovely accent on a windowsill or patio.
Process
Wheel-thrown from Rod’s Bod clay, each planter is shaped and dried before its first firing. After bisque firing, the piece was glazed in Emily purple from the bottom up to about the last inch (at the top). The top half of the piece was then dipped in Rutile glaze, a glaze that develops stunning depth in a cone 10 reduction atmosphere. The combination of clay, glazes and firing atmosphere creates soft transitions of purple, tan, and blue, ensuring that no two planters are ever alike.
