Wood Fired Emily Purple Dented Dotted Cup

This handmade wood-fired ceramic cup reveals the beautiful unpredictability of wood firing. A flowing curtain of vibrant blue, and purple move across the surface, creating a landscape of color that could never be duplicated. Details
The cup stands 3.5" tall, and measures 3.5" across the rim. This cup holds 11 ounces when full, or it can hold about 8 ounces of hot beverage in the belly, leaving the neck cool and easy to grasp.

Use
Holding approximately 11 ounces, this cup is a wonderful everyday companion for coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cider, or your favorite cold beverages. It also makes a beautiful wine cup, cocktail tumbler, or small serving vessel for desserts or snacks. The rounded form fits comfortably in the hand, while its unique wood-fired surface brings warmth and character to daily routine. Whether enjoyed every morning or displayed among a collection, this cup offers both beauty and function.

Process

The cup was thrown on my pottery wheel using BMix clay, a white stoneware. While still wet, the edge of a wooden rib was used to press a dent into the belly of the cup. I applied a few small dots of white slip (a blend of clay and water) just below the dent. This shape and texture makes the cup nice to hold, and it provides the glaze something to pool and flow around. The cup was glazed in emily purple on the interior around the lip and top inch or so. The glaze was also brushed into the dent, and encouraged to drip down. The rest of the exterior was left unglazed.

This piece was fired in a wood-burning kiln at Desert Dragon Pottery Studio in North Phoenix. Unlike electric or gas kilns, wood firing relies entirely on burning wood to build heat and atmosphere inside the kiln. As the kiln is stoked, flame, ash, and minerals from the burning wood move naturally around the pottery, creating organic surface markings, flashing, and subtle color transitions that cannot be replicated through glazing alone.

The kiln used is a fast-fire wood kiln that reaches temperature in approximately 12 hours. The dynamic nature of wood firing means each piece responds differently to its placement within the kiln, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind works that capture the spontaneity and beauty of the firing process.

This one-of-a-kind wood fired mug combines rich purple glaze with a deeply textured brown surface, creating a beautiful contrast between glossy color and earthy texture. The mug stands around 4.75 inches tall, and just over 3 inches across the lip. They hold around 12 ounces, and all of my pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe.

Woo Blue and Rutile Pedestal Bowl

This handmade ceramic pedestal bowl combines a generous, gently curved bowl with a sturdy raised foot, giving it a low, sculptural profile. Deep blue and purple tones cover the exterior, with subtle variations and flashes of lighter color that become especially apparent as the surface catches the light. Inside, the glaze opens up into warm golden-brown tones, creating a beautiful contrast with the darker exterior.

At 9 inches across and 4 1/4 inches tall, this is a substantial bowl with plenty of presence on a table or shelf. The wide, open form makes it feel both functional and sculptural – a piece that can be enjoyed for its beautiful surface even when it's not in use.

Details
This bowl measures a bit over 9" across the rim, and it stands 4.25" tall. At the base of the foot, it measures 6" across. The foot accounts for about 1.25" of the bowls total height.

The generous size and wide, open shape make this pedestal bowl wonderfully versatile. Use it as a serving bowl for salads, fruit, snacks, or other foods, or as a decorative bowl for displaying seasonal objects, flowers, or other treasures. Blue Slipped and Dented Rutile Bud Vase

This handmade ceramic bud vase has a softly rounded form that has been intentionally altered with a deep indentation along one side, giving the piece an organic, sculptural character. Blue slip beneath the glaze follows the contours of the altered surface, while the glaze flows and gathers around the indentation, creating a beautiful sense of movement through the blues, lavender, and warm earthy tones.
