Wood Fired Slip Textured Purple Mug

This one-of-a-kind wood fired mug combines rich purple glaze with a deeply textured brown surface, creating a beautiful contrast between glossy color and earthy texture. The organic, ridged surface gives the mug a tactile quality that makes it especially enjoyable to hold, while the deep blue-purple glaze adds a bold pop of color around the upper portion.

At approximately 12 ounces, this mug is a comfortable size for coffee, tea, or your favorite everyday drink. Like all of my pottery, it is made by hand and designed to be both beautiful and functional.

Details
The mug stands around 4.75 inches tall, and just over 3 inches across the lip. They hold around 12 ounces, and all of my pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe.

Use
Perfect for your morning coffee or afternoon tea. The slip textured body and generous handle make these mugs comfortable to hold and a joy to use. These mugs have a narrowed neck that will to help keep the heat inside your cup.

Process
The mug was made with Bmix clay (a white stoneware) on my potter's wheel. A brown slip (a blend of water, iron and clay) was applied to the bottom section of the mug while it was still wet on the wheel. To create the texture, a ragged brush was drug through the wet slip as the cup slowly spun on the wheel. After drying and bisque firing, the mug was glazed with emily purple on the interior, over the lip and down to the slipped belly, which was left unglazed.

This piece was fired in a wood-burning kiln at Desert Dragon Pottery Studio in North Phoenix. Unlike electric or gas kilns, wood firing relies entirely on burning wood to build heat and atmosphere inside the kiln. As the kiln is stoked, flame, ash, and minerals from the burning wood move naturally around the pottery, creating organic surface markings, flashing, and subtle color transitions that cannot be replicated through glazing alone.

The kiln used is a fast-fire wood kiln that reaches temperature in approximately 12 hours. The dynamic nature of wood firing means each piece responds differently to its placement within the kiln, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind works that capture the spontaneity and beauty of the firing process.

Woo Blue and Rutile Pedestal Bowl

This handmade ceramic pedestal bowl combines a generous, gently curved bowl with a sturdy raised foot, giving it a low, sculptural profile. Deep blue and purple tones cover the exterior, with subtle variations and flashes of lighter color that become especially apparent as the surface catches the light. Inside, the glaze opens up into warm golden-brown tones, creating a beautiful contrast with the darker exterior.

This bowl measures a bit over 9" across the rim, and it stands 4.25" tall. At the base of the foot, it measures 6" across. The foot accounts for about 1.25" of the bowls total height.

This handmade ceramic bud vase has a softly rounded form that has been intentionally altered with a deep indentation along one side, giving the piece an organic, sculptural character.
