This handmade wood fired ceramic planter brings together warm earth tones and soft blues in a piece that feels both rustic and refined. Flashes of cream, honey, and orange wrap around the belly, while a band of lavender blue mingles around the rim. Details
This planter measures a little over 4.5" wide at the lip and about 4" wide at the base. It stands approximately 3.25" tall, with the bottom ⅓" narrowed above the base . Two drainage holes are built into the narrowed base, each about the size of a small fingertip. All of my pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe unless otherwise noted.
Use
Perfect for succulents, cacti, herbs, or other small houseplants, this planter provides an attractive home while allowing the natural beauty of the pottery to complement the plant. The elevated foot gives the piece a light, balanced appearance, making it equally suited for indoor displays or covered outdoor spaces.
Process
This planter was thrown on my pottery wheel using Sonoran White, a white stoneware clay. The planter was glazed in Shino glaze, down to just above the narrowed base. A dip of Woo Blue glaze was added around the rim, which provided the dreamy lavender blues.
This piece was fired in a wood-burning kiln at Desert Dragon Pottery Studio in North Phoenix. Unlike electric or gas kilns, wood firing relies entirely on burning wood to build heat and atmosphere inside the kiln. As the kiln is stoked, flame, ash, and minerals from the burning wood move naturally around the pottery, creating organic surface markings, flashing, and subtle color transitions that cannot be replicated through glazing alone.
The kiln used is a fast-fire wood kiln that reaches temperature in approximately 12 hours. The dynamic nature of wood firing means each piece responds differently to its placement within the kiln, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind works that capture the spontaneity and beauty of the firing process.
