Rutile Blue and Brown Swirl Crock
Rutile Blue and Brown Swirl Crock
This rich and warm Rutile Blue and Brown Crock will be a gorgeous addition to any countertop. It's meant to be a spoon crock, or possibly a wine chiller, or maybe a wide vase for a big beautiful bunch of flowers. The possibilities really are endless for a pot like this, it could even be warmed in the oven to make a roll warmer.
Details
The crock stands just under 6 inches tall, and measures 5 inches across the lip. All of my pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe, unless otherwise noted.
The interior of the crock, and around the top few inches was glazed in Goldspot, a warm golden tan. Rutile glaze was added over the outside, creating a swirl of warm earthy browns, blues and lavenders. Where the 2 glazes are layered, they've produced a pretty band of blue.
Use
This crock would be perfect for a countertop spoon and utensil crock. It could make an excellent ice bucket for wine or champagne. Or it could be used to display a large bouquet of flowers. This is a versatile pot that could be used in many different ways.
Process
This piece was made using Rods Bod clay, a brown stoneware clay. A layer of brown iron oxide slip (a blend of clay, water and iron oxide for color) was painted around the outside of the pot using a jagged brush to add texture. The swirl shape was pressed into the pot through the slip texture with a rib tool. The rib was moved upward as the wet pot spun on the wheel, while my fingers pressed out from the inside. This created the dynamic swirl shape.
The piece was glazed in a combination of goldspot and rutile glazes. It was fired to cone 10 in an oxygen reduced atmosphere.
