White and Blue Slipped and Swirled Planter with Drainage

$38.00

This wheel-thrown ceramic planter adds a natural, easy charm to any space. Featuring a blue slipped and swirled surface contrasted against a creamy gloss white finish, this pot balances soft color with everyday function. Two built-in drainage holes help keep plants healthy, while the attached saucer protects your surfaces.

Details
This planter measures nearly 4.5" tall and 4.5" wide at the lip, with a base about 4" wide. The planter is 4.25" deep on the interior, with the bottom 1.25" inches narrowed. The interior is left unglazed. Two drainage holes - each about the size of a fingertip - are built into the narrowed base to promote drainage.

The surface features a layer of blue clay slip - a smooth blend of clay, cobalt blue stain, and water. A dip of Milky White glaze around the planter softens the blue color, and enhances surface texture created by the brushed on slip. The gently swirled form and integrated saucer make this piece as practical as it is beautiful.

Use
Ideal for small houseplants, herbs, or succulents. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, it works just as well on a patio or porch as it does on a windowsill, shelf, or desk.

Process
This planter was thrown on my potters wheel using white BMix cone 5 clay. As this piece was being thrown, the blue texture was painted around the wet pot with a blue slip (clay that's been watered down and blended smooth with blue stain). The swirl shape was then added by pressing into the side of the pot, through the wet slip, using the rounded end of a rubber rib. As my fingers pressed out from the interior of the pot, the rib and my interior hand moved quickly up the pot as it spun, pressing in the swirl shape with a single pass.

The planter was glazed in Milky Gloss glaze, over the entire exterior and attached drip plate. The lip and top half inch was glazed, and the interior of the pot was left unglazed. This piece was fired to Cone 6 in an electric kiln at my studio in Avondale Arizona.

Care
All of my pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe.
