Large Handmade Ceramic Jar with Rutile Blue and Goldspot Glaze
This large wheel thrown ceramic jar is a functional piece of art. It's rutile blue glaze flows beautifully over the deep brown texture painted around the belly, creating a striking and unique surface. Perfect for storing kitchen staples, tea, coffee, sugar, or even keepsakes, this jar brings a touch of charm to any space.
The generous size and handmade craftsmanship make this jar a statement piece for your kitchen counter, dining room, or office. The lid keeps contents protected, while the generous knob allows for easy handling.
Details
This jar measures 7 inches tall to the knob and 6.5 inches wide at the belly. Without the lid, it stands 5 inches tall. The base is approximately 5 inches wide, and the inner opening measures 3.75 inches across, and it holds 5 cups.
One side of the jar was exposed to an oxygen draft during the reduced oxygen firing. This created a lighter effect on about a 1/4 section of the pot, which is very visible in some pictures and in the video.
Use
Ideal as a functional kitchen canister for storing coffee beans, sugar, flour, or tea. It can also serve as a keepsake jar for treasured items or a decorative piece for any room in your home. Its distinctive glaze and form make it equally suited for practical use or display.
Process
This jar was thrown on my potters wheel using Laguna Rods Bod clay. A brown iron oxide slip (watered down clay that has been blended smooth) was painted around the belly of the pot. A jagged brush was used to create texture in the slip.
This jar was finished with a combination of rutile and goldspot glazes. It was fired to cone 10 in a reduced oxygen atmosphere.
