The bottle was made using cone 10 BMix clay, a durable white stoneware clay. The swirl shape was pressed into the bottle as it was being thrown on my potter's wheel. The bottle was glazed with Woo Blue glaze on the interior and the top few inches of the exterior of the bottle. The rest was left unglazed, to allow the atmosphere of the wood kiln to leave it's unique markings. This piece was fired to well over cone 10 (about 2400° F). The natural variations in the glaze are unique to each firing, making this bottle truly one-of-a-kind.
Wood firing pottery is a traditional method where pottery is fired in a kiln fueled solely by wood, resulting in unique colors, textures, and patterns due to the interaction of flame and ash with the clay surfaces. The process infuses every piece with both the warmth of the fire and the community effort involved in firing the wood kiln.
This piece was wood fired at the Desert Dragon Pottery Studio in North Phoenix, AZ.
